"Childrens Emergency Department (BHSCT)"

About: Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick children / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I attended RBHSC's emergency department on Halloween night 2025 with my 10 year old daughter around 9pm.  My daughter had fell whilst in my street and injured her wrist.  I was expecting a long wait as anticipated that there could be many patients in the unit, considering it was Halloween night and kids are all out and about which inevitably results in greater chances of kids requiring hospital treatment following accidents.  To my surprise the unit appeared very quiet, in terms of patient numbers.   On arrival I was greeted by a male receptionist (apologies, I can't recall  the names of any of the staff I encountered during this attendance).  The receptionist was very professional and courteous.  We were then triaged by a staff nurse who appeared very caring and humorous with my daughter which I feel put my daughter at ease.

My daughter was then seen by a registrar who again was very caring and put her at ease.  The registrar arranged a very prompt x Ray and again the radiographer was very friendly and professional.  We got our x Ray results within around 15 minutes.  Unfortunately my daughter was diagnosed as having a buckle fracture to her wrist but was promptly provided with a splint and advice to aid her recovery.  Whilst this was thankfully a minor injury to my daughter and the department did not appear very busy I just wanted to use this platform to extend my gratitude to staff involved in her care.

I am fully aware of dissatisfaction patients can unfortunately experience particularly in our emergency departments.  Whilst I was lucky that the department appeared quieter than usual it was clear to me that all staff in the unit, including those that I did not have any direct interactions with were all working away and taking a real patient centred approach to their work.  I would like to take the opportunity to thank all staff involved in my daughters care for their professionalism and friendliness which I believe is essential in a children's unit.  Having previously worked in RBHSC myself I am fully aware of the pressure these staff and teams face on a daily basis.  I would hope that my thanks can be extended to the entire team in the RBHSC emergency department

Thank you for taking the time to share such thoughtful and detailed feedback following your visit to our Emergency Department on Halloween night.

I am very pleased to hear that, despite your understandable concern about long waits on such a busy evening, your daughter was seen promptly and cared for with professionalism and kindness throughout. It is wonderful to know that the receptionist made a positive first impression, that the staff nurse provided both care and reassurance with good humour, and that the registrar and radiographer continued that patient-centred approach. I am also glad that your daughter received her X-ray results quickly and was able to have her wrist supported with a splint to aid her recovery.

Your recognition of the pressures our teams face on a daily basis—particularly coming from someone who has previously worked in RBHSC—means a great deal. Even on quieter shifts, the demands on staff can be significant, and hearing that you experienced a genuinely warm, friendly, and child-focused environment is incredibly encouraging for the team.

Please be assured that your thanks and positive feedback will be shared in full with all of the staff involved in your daughter’s care, as well as with the wider Emergency Department team. Messages like yours make a real difference, and the team will greatly appreciate your kind words.

We all wish your daughter a very speedy and comfortable recovery, and thank you again for taking the time to reach out.

Trish McKinney

Co- Director
