I attended A&E in agonising pain after a bad fall the night before, unable to put weight on my foot. I had to hobble around alone as no one offered me any assistance despite being clearly in visible pain. After waiting hours, I finally saw the doctor for less than two minutes, who then sent me for an X-ray. The radiographer was kind enough to wheel me back into the overcrowded waiting area, where I waited again.
When my name was eventually called, I was expecting some privacy or at least a consultation room. Instead, the doctor approached my wheelchair in the middle of the waiting area, with no privacy, and loudly informed me in front of everyone that my X-ray was clear and that it was "just a sprain." I was offered no bandage, no support, no proper aftercare advice — simply told to use ice and take paracetamol. She then told me to call someone to pick me up, leaving me to hobble out still in severe pain.
I left feeling extremely embarrassed, dismissed, and as though my pain was completely minimised. The entire experience lacked basic compassion, dignity, and professionalism. At no point was my injury or X-ray explained to me in detail, nor was I offered any support for the pain and difficulty walking. Quite frankly, I would rather stay home than go back after such a horrible experience.
"Incredibly dismissive and embarrassing experience "
