"Great patient care"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department University Hospital Hairmyres / Medical/Surgical Ambulatory Care Unit University Hospital Hairmyres / Surgical Receiving Unit (Ward 4) University Hospital Hairmyres / Theatres, Recovery & Anaesthetics

(as a relative),

I am relaying this story on behalf of my partner, who was admitted to Hairmyres Hospital via A & E following an infection from a routine hernia operation at another hospital.

He waited almost 9 hours to be seen by a doctor in A & E but once he was seen, he had a scan, was commenced on IV antibiotics and was admitted to Ward 4 within a couple of hours.

All the staff on Ward 4 were fantastic from the nurses, to his consultant (Mr Di Rollo), Jack the junior doctor  and  Lorraine, who supplied cups of tea with a chat and a smile.

After returning to theatre for a further operation and a 4 night stay he was discharged home with instructions to attend our local health centre for wound care. Unfortunately the practice nurse was unable to "manage" the wound as it was too large,  however they were unable to provide us with an alternative .

Feeling desperate by this stage we attended Hairmyres Hospital, Ward 4 again and despite already being discharged we met a lovely Advanced Nurse Practitioner called Clare, who directed us to SACU (Surgical Ambulatory Care Unit) based within Hairmyres.

My partner has been attending this unit twice a week for the past 5 weeks to have his dressing changed and also have bloods taken. I have to say the care he received in this unit was outstanding. Every single member of staff was amazing, but special thanks to Julie , Allan and Janet (Advanced Nurse Practitioners) who were wonderful and a credit to the NHS.

He has now been discharged from their care and is almost fully recovered.  My partner and myself have both worked  for the NHS for many years and although we were on the "other side" it enforces the difference that great patient care can make.

Dear LCM 1

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback of behalf of your partner. I am sorry to read that he had such a long wait in the A&E department. That must have been a worrying time for your partner and he has clearly had a very difficult journey of care post surgery.

It is disappointing to read that your practice nurse was unable to manage your partners wound and did not provide an alternative plan of care. I would not expect you to have to find a solution. However I am glad that the ambulatory care unit were able to provide ongoing care.

Despite the difficulties your partner has faced you have given such positive feedback to several members of staff. Mr Di Rollo, Jack and Lorraine will be delighted to read that once your partner was transferred to ward 4 he received good care. The advanced practitioner team of Clare, Allan, Janet and Julie as well as the rest of the staff in the surgical ambulatory care unit will also appreciate your kind words.

Yourself and your partner will understand how important it is to receive feedback and your comments will be widely shared. Thank you again.

Please let me know if you would like me to look into your experience at the practice nurse as I am happy to follow this up.

I hope that your partner is continuing to recover well.

Best wishes to you both

Lise
