Poor communication on the night following surgery from staff. I found the staff to be very unapproachable on duty on the Nightshift that night. Brilliant staff during the day on the ward but pain relief was not adequately addressed for my son throughout the night and nobody even came in once to check if we were ok even though they must have heard him crying. I had to constantly press the buzzer. I did not find the nurses were approachable. Son had cleft palate repair that day obviously in a lot of pain. Staff seemed more concerned about his oral intake and pushing things orally even though they were not really checking his pain levels.
Nursing staff then continually pushed fluid from a syringe into a cannula which was met with a lot of resistance. Cannula then tissued, I found his leg was wet and very swollen and discoloured during an infusion. Clear cellulitis. Staff did not seem to appreciate the urgency following this and simply said they would "hand it over" but did not bleep for a doctor/take a photo/mark an outline to check for spread and instead left this to day staff.
Further issues then developed when night staff did not bleep a doctor in the early hours of the morning to get oral pain relief medication written up as he had no cannula in from 3am. This then was left to the Saturday day staff and we had to wait over 2 hours with my child screaming in pain, me without sleep and very upset before we got our adequate medication. No empathy or compassion from night staff or even basic communication and dignity displayed to myself as a worried mummy. Another mum on ward actually came and asked if I needed anything through the night. The staff did not. Very very poor nursing care.
