My elderly father received a total hip repair this week in Altnagelvin Area Hosptial. He stayed in Ward 21 for 4 nights. My father was cared for by a variety of people (MDT) who were nothing short of courteous, respectful, knowledgable and professional. As a healthcare staff member in a neighbourhood trust, I felt the ward environment was inviting and well led.
The nurses all worked well together and put my father at ease with any of his concerns, and needs. He enjoyed his food choices and overall patient experience. It doesn’t go unnoticed how ALL the ward staff, including ward host and domestics all took care of him. He woke early on a few mornings and was given tea and offered a bite to eat which is sometimes the basic care a person needs when unwell and away from their own home environment. I am proud of my profession when I see the values and basic fundamentals of nursing care in full flight.
Thank you all for your dedication to the job and most especially to my father this week. Never underestimate the value of your role, especially in times when we can be judged for not being quick enough or chirpy enough when overwhelmed with work, staff shortages and an under funded health system. Be proud of yourselves
"Excellent patient care"
