"Access to Covid vaccine"

About: NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde / Covid Vaccination Programme

(as a service user),

Previous Frontline worker during 2020 - 2022. Contracted Long covid, attended LC clinic 23. Advised to continue to with Covid Vaccinations and Winter vaccinations during winter 2024. No issues with side effects after administration of vaccines.

Last November 2024, I received both C19 vaccine and Winter flu. I booked it through the NHS portal, masked up and went and got them both with no side effects.

So when the spring vaccination programme started I went online and did the same procedure. I went into the local hub, checked in and then the Nurse came over asked a few questions re meds. Then they explained they needed to speak to the clinical lead/ Nurse. I sat and waited for 5 minutes.

The Nurse came back and explained they were sorry that they would not administer the c19 vaccine as I have LC. However, if I spoke to my GP and they wrote me a prescribed letter then they would arrange another appointment and do it.

So I left the building slightly mortified and extremely exhausted. I went around the corner to my GP surgery and spoke to the receptionist who took all the details and said they would phone me once my GP has got back to them.

I received a call from the surgery to explain my GP does not recommend me taking the vaccine as it could do more harm than good. I replied to the Receptionist that I am currently reading The Long Covid Handbook by Professor Danny Altman ( Immunologist } He states having the c19 vaccines can help with LC symptoms and prevent you becoming seriously ill with another C19 infection. Unfortunately, they replied that they were explaining the GP's recommendation. So I just thanked them and closed the call.

Why, have the vaccination board changed the criteria? Why are individuals with Long covid not being protected, supported and listened to?

Stop the cost cutting exercise and protect the Frontline staff who went out and put their lives at risk to help and support others during Lockdown.

Dear Mar33

Thank you for getting in touch. We apologise for the upset and distress caused by your experience.

We appreciate your concerns regarding the eligibility criteria, however, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) which covers all of the UK, makes the decision on who is eligible for any vaccination including Covid.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-vaccination-in-2025-and-spring-2026-jcvi-advice/jcvi-statement-on-covid-19-vaccination-in-2025-and-spring-2026

The COVID-19 vaccination guidelines are continually reviewed.

If you are concerned about your health I would suggest speaking to your GP for further advice.

Kind Regards

Nicole

Update posted by Mar33 (a service user)

That is not an acceptable response. There should be public led consulatation with JVCi committee before changing any eligable criteria.

Frontline workers with long covid must be protected from further C19 varients/ infections.

It is nothing to do with GP's the issue is with NHSGGC

They must provide reasearch led data on all Long Covid Case studies to the JVCI to prevent failures in the system.
