"Postive Experience"

About: South West Acute Hospital / Ward 7 Western Health & Social Care Trust / Dementia companion service

(as a relative),

In a world we're its full of bad press , I am delighted to share my dad's story.

My dad has mixed dementia and has very lucid moments. After a good few months in ward 7 , the level of care my dad received was fantastic.

My elderly mum along with our family , was able to return home and priotitise his care  for the future. I could not fault one member of staff on the team for the level of care and compassion dad received.

I must add the dementia companion service,  was a vital part of dad's journey  and recovery. Clare , Jane and Brendan are gifts to the NHS. Dad was brought to the day room daily for activites , watched farming programmes on the Ipad and out for a nice cup of tea in the cafe or outside for a walk ..( dad spent his whole working life outside as a farmer).

Ward 7 thank you for everything.

Dear MauraAnt12,

Thank you for taking the time to post this story about the care your Dad received in Ward 7, SWAH - 'Positive Experience'

I am delighted that the level of care your Dad received was fantastic. To hear the positive story of your Dad receiving care and compassion is so important. Being admitted to hospital can be distressing and difficult for patients and families. But even more so to someone who has mixed dementia the unfamiliar surroundings in an acute hospital can be very distressing. Especially when it is a prolonged stay in hospital

The Dementia companion service have a vital role in the ward 7 team. Clare, Jane and Brendan provide positive and engaging interactions through their activities. Person centred care is paramount to dementia care. Identifying your Dads individual needs. Engaging with your Dad through activities and watching farming programmes on the IPad. Going to the cafe for a cup of tea or outside for a walk. These will all have helped with your Dad's recovery and his hospital experience. As your Dad was active his working life being outside as a farmer. Allowing him those opportunities to get out of the ward environment and go to the cafe or outside for a walk will have enhanced his experience in hospital.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience of Ward 7 with Care Opinion.

Your feed back is welcome and I will let the team know about your Dad's 'Positive Experience', I will also let Clare, Jane and Brendan know they are 'gifts to the NHS'.

Best Wishes

Ann
