"Treated with great compassion and care"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Accident & Emergency Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

(as a relative),

Last month my brother was taken to hospital with internal bleeding secondary to alcoholic liver decompensation. At the time I was on holiday abroad so obviously unable to be there in person. I spoke several times with Dr Boswell who explained the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis for my brother, which was not good; she was extremely professional and empathetic and she displayed great humanity and care in how she dealt with myself over the phone and my other brother who was there in person.

Dr Boswell called me back towards the end of her shift to make sure I understood what had happened and answer any questions I had. My surviving brother states that all of the staff treated him and our brother with great compassion and care, that he had a dignified and peaceful death and that we both agreed that the Ambulance service, the staff in A+E and ICU4 had done everything they could to save him, but unfortunately his illness had progressed past the point of recovery.

Dear dancede85,

Thank you for sharing your feedback at what must still be a very difficult time. Please allow me to firstly express my condolences to you and your family on the loss of your brother. We can only hope that the exemplary communication, compassion and care you describe from all of our staff and Dr Boswell in particular, made the situation as bearable as it could be, under the circumstances. This reflects the high quality of care we strive to provide for every patient and family, and I know all of the staff involved in your brothers' care will be touched by your kind words of appreciation. I will be sure to share your feedback with them.

Kindest regards,

Lisa Martin,

Patient Experience Public Involvement Team.
